DIY vs Call a Plumber: When to Pick Up the Phone

Some plumbing jobs are fine to tackle yourself. Others will cost you ten times more if you get them wrong. Here's a straightforward guide for Halifax homeowners.

Safe to DIY

Replacing a showerhead, swapping a toilet seat, or tightening a loose supply line — these are low-risk jobs. If you can turn off the water supply and follow instructions, you're fine.

Call a Pro

Anything behind a wall or under a floor. If you're cutting into drywall to get at a pipe, you need a licensed plumber. One wrong move with a copper line and you've got water damage in two rooms.

Boiler and heating repairs. Gas and oil systems are not DIY territory. Carbon monoxide risk alone makes this worth the call.

Main line backups. If every drain in the house is slow or gurgling, the problem is likely in your sewer main. That needs cameras and proper snaking equipment — not a bottle of drain cleaner.

Hot water tank replacement. These require proper venting, gas connections, and code compliance. Not worth the risk.
