How to Prevent Clogged Drains in Multi-Unit Buildings

If you manage an apartment building in Halifax, drain problems are probably your most common maintenance headache. Here's what actually works to keep lines clear.
Educate Tenants on What Not to Flush
Wet wipes are the number one cause of main line backups in multi-unit buildings — even the ones labeled flushable. They don't break down. Grease and cooking oil are the second biggest culprit. Provide clear signage in laundry rooms and kitchens.
Schedule Preventative Snaking
Don't wait for a backup. Have your main lines snaked every 6 to 12 months depending on the building size and age. Regular maintenance snaking costs a fraction of an emergency call.
Camera Inspections
If you're getting recurring backups in the same line, a camera inspection will show you exactly what's going on — tree root intrusion, collapsed pipe, or buildup. It takes the guesswork out of the repair.
Install Backwater Valves
If your building is in a low-lying area of Halifax or Dartmouth, a backwater valve on the main sewer line prevents municipal sewer backup during heavy rain. It's one of the best investments you can make for a multi-unit property.
